Originally published in 1958, the author provided an instructive narration of Allied amphibious operations against Finnish and Russian coastal fortifications in the Baltic during the years 1854-5 of the Crimean War. Reproduced from the NR’s archives [46/2, p. 136]. A 30 minute read.

The recent British Trade Fair in Helsinki gave cause for much speechmaking. One of the bull points of speeches was that Finland and Britain had only twice been at war with one another in the course of history: once vicariously during the Crimean War when Finland was a Grand Duchy of Russia, when only one English sailor was killed, and once in World War II, when no warlike act occurred between us.
