The RN stands, once again, at a fork in the design road for its amphibious fleet. The cancellation of the Multi-Role Strike Ship (MRSS) programme and its replacement by a leaner, jointly procured Amphibious Transport Ship (ATS), built in partnership with the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN), is a pragmatic response to fiscal reality.[1] Four hulls, each nominally 160 metres and 15,000 tonnes, will do the work that six larger MRSS vessels were once intended to do.[2] What has not yet been settled is the basic architecture of these ships: a conventional Landing Platform Dock (LPD), with a flight de…
