The Royal Navy has a rich and distinguished tradition of Chaplaincy that spans centuries. Its formal roots can be traced to 1626, when King Charles I ordered that every ship in the fleet should have a Chaplain on board. However, the presence of spiritual support at sea predates even this. In 1147, during preparations for a maritime expedition, King Stephen of England declared that “on board each ship there shall be a Priest,” reflecting the longstanding recognition of the importance of pastoral care for those at sea.
