Holding reservations about the unknowns of the Type 83, the author considers the future of joint surface combatant procurement in the United Kingdom and Australia. A 15 minute read.

With the Type 45 destroyer due to leave service by the end of the 2030s, serious thought is being given as to what its replacement, the Type 83, will look like. The United Kingdom, though, is not the only country faced with this problem and there is the possibility of collaboration. While there are many countries that the UK could collaborate with on this, I argue in this piece that Australia would be an excellent partner for this project. Not only are timelines fairly nicely aligned, along with fairly similar requirements, but experience with ongoing collaborative projects, particularly AUKUS…
