Originally presented at St. Nick’s Church, Liverpool, on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023, as part of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic NR Chairman Vice Admiral Sir Clive Johnstone examined the conflict in Ukraine today, and emphasized how the WRNS of the Second World War were vital to the defeat of the U-boat threat. A 10 minute read.

I would like to approach this lecture about ‘understanding our enemy’ in two threads: the first about and around the threat from Russia, with Ukraine clearly uppermost on our minds; and second the Battle of the Atlantic itself. In particular I would like to just touch on the importance of the Western Approaches Tactics Unit (WATU), based then just down the road here in Liverpool City Centre, and the contribution played by Captain Gilbert Roberts and his staff of young women who in the end decoded and understood the German submarine tactics and designed their own counter-tactics, to significant…
