Sir, – In the November edition of The Naval Review (NR Vol 106/4), reflecting the conventual wisdom, you and Sir Jeremy Blackham joined in the chorus of criticism of the 1919 Treaties which ended the First World War. I accept that this assessment of the Treaties was taken up by Adolf Hitler to stir German feelings of victimisation but this would have been true of any treaty which could have been negotiated at that time. It was bound to restore Alsace and Lorraine to France and Poland to its independent status. Moreover, the people who condemn 1919 today generally seem happy with the post 1945…
