The author considers the geostrategic implications for Russia’s naval forces in the Baltic and Black Sea, theatres where geopolitical developments or naval losses have significantly weakened the Russian Navy’s sea control capabilities. A 10 minute read.

Of all the senior officers in Russia’s Armed Forces, the admirals have more cause to be disillusioned by Putin‘s war than their counterparts in the Army and Air Force. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine provoked Finland and Sweden to seek membership of NATO, and they will soon have the benefits of full membership of that defensive alliance. These two new members, together with the other six with coastlines on the Baltic, will be able to immobilize Russia’s Baltic Fleet.
