A summary of the UK Coastal Security and Communities conference that was co-hosted by the RN Strategic Studies Centre and the University of Portsmouth in April 2023. The author expands upon the major themes that were discussed, making the connection between technology, the environment, and the United Kingdom’s coastal communities. A 10 minute read.

Throughout most of the Royal Navy’s history, despite an often global focus, its primary mission has been the defence of the coastline of the British Isles. In April 2023 the Royal Navy’s Strategic Studies Centre (RNSSC) co-hosted a conference with the University of Portsmouth to review the changing priorities, opportunities and challenges that exist for the RN in UK coastal regions. This piece will cover some of the key findings, which highlight that brown water is not binary to blue water and that coastal operations are core to UK maritime security and prosperity.
