The author argues that the recent events in Gaza have seriously delayed the peace process and any chance for long-term peace will necessarily require communication, amongst the younger generation in particular. Members of faith communities will have a part to play in de-escalating tensions while politicians will need to attend to a multifaceted and historic series of issues, not least of which is bridging the educational divide between Palestinian and Israeli youth. A Muslim colleague has been collecting news articles on the Gaza conflict. What has he noticed? He has noticed that pro–Israel individuals and groups tend to take the position that “Jews are once again being attacked by terrorists,” whilst pro-Palestinian individuals and groups argue that “the Palestinians are a people oppressed by their Israeli neighbours.” Each side, he notes, takes a position but there is no actual meeting between the two.
