It was announced, under the AUKUS pact, that the US and UK would share nuclear propulsion technology with Australia as they had with each other since 1958 under the US-UK Mutual Defence Agreement. The Royal Australian Navy would acquire at least eight nuclear-powered submarines armed with conventional weapons to be built in Australia. Australia would extend the life of its Collins-class submarines and might consider leasing or buying nuclear-powered submarines from the US or the UK.
