The author examines the state of the art with regard to generative AI, contending that human-like complex reasoning functions are necessary to improve AI’s usefulness for the RN, potentially introducing an advisory function for AI in the near future, alongside automating many other tasks and functions. Anywhere I look, from articles, speeches, interviews to X’s (formerly known as tweets); I see statements of intent for the use of AI in industry. Our organisation is no different. The First Sea Lord described AI as “causing us to reimagine warfare, creating dynamic new benchmarks for accuracy, efficiency and lethality.”[1] But what does this really mean?
