The author revisits the status of the Ukraine War, a year after his initial analysis [111/2, p. 18]. The failure of either side to deliver a knockout blow, and the systemic nature of new military technology, has reduced the conflict to grinding attrition with few prospects for definitive victory. A 25 minute read.

The Germans, who know a thing or two about the conduct of war, have a word for it – in fact two. The first is Niederwerfungsstrategie, the pursuit of victory through the complete overthrow of the adversary, preferably in a sudden, short and decisive campaign. This is what most war leaders would prefer, because it tends to be less costly, militarily, politically and economically. The devastation of the adversary should be such that it will take him a long-time to recover, so the effects should be long-lasting.
