Our correspondent, an expert on the fate of Force Z, responds to Bruce Pascoe’s analysis of Admiral Tom Phillips’ decision-making during the Malay oki kaisen.

Sir, – I read with great interest ‘Admiral Tom Phillips and the final command of Force Z’ [112/1, pg. 83] as I had examined the decisions affecting the fate of Force Z in Hostages to Fortune: Winston Churchill & the Loss of the Prince of Wales & Repulse (Stroud: Sutton Publishing 2005) and to a lesser extent in my May 2017 article on Force Z in the NR [105/2, pg. 168]. The author has obviously spent a good amount of time studying the subject, and, while I agree with much of what he has written, I have a different view on the soundness of some of Admiral Phillips’ decisions.
