Message from the Editor

The author echoes the sentiment of Jackthelad that, for the NR to grow its membership, it must recognize the reality of both time constraints and the issues that matter to the current generation of Service personnel. Three of the eight founding members of the NR were Lieutenants who no doubt recognised the risk to their careers they were making by joining the ranks of an organisation that was not universally welcomed. Nothing gets changed by saying nowt, so my plea to WatchOnStopOn and your contemporaries is write and we will publish, the Naval Review belongs to all of its membership. I am the Editor – not the censor.

Sir, – I read with interest Jackthelad’s piece (111/2 p. 37) on the recurring theme of an apparent lack of interest from junior officers in the Review and its contents. The author hit the nail on the head when highlighting that the current job places so much time burden on the majority of modern sea-going officers (and indeed senior and junior rates), that it leaves little time to enjoy a private life let alone any extracurricular activities. I am currently serving on loan-service with a NATO ally and the contrasts in fatigue levels, quality of life and day-to-day morale are stark. Thing…
