The first wartime meeting between Churchill and Roosevelt took place at Placentia Bay in Newfoundland over three days, 9-12 August 1941. Their meeting became known as The Atlantic Conference. Whilst it did not result in America’s entry in the war, it was “important because of the opportunity it [gave] the British and American staffs to get to know each other and to work together.”[1] Churchill brought with him aboard HMS Prince of Wales his Chiefs of Staff, First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, and Chief of the Imperial General Staff General Sir John Dill.
