This article offers up five short simple thoughts that the author has had while being involved in various parts of operational planning; while not being a warfare officer and therefore originating from outside the usual group think. The author’s experience includes contributing to the current Fighting Instructions on Operational Planning, being involved in the development of the module for ICSC(M) and conducting operational planning including for an EU mission, Task Force Helmand and RN Task Groups.
